Sales Status

Sales Status identifies a contact’s current stage in the sales process. Choose the status that best reflects their current position and record relevant details and the next follow-up action.

Current position, not a mandatory sequence

Contacts may skip stages or move back to an earlier stage. Sales Status is a Contact property, separate from Deal stages and HubSpot’s standard Lead Status.

Guidance for sales representatives

  • Update Sales Status when a conversation, appointment, or confirmed milestone changes the contact’s situation.
  • Choose the status that best reflects the contact’s current position.
  • Contacts may skip stages or move back to an earlier stage. This is not a mandatory step-by-step sequence.
  • Use Long-Term Nurture for an interested buyer with a later timeline, Unresponsive when interest is unknown, and Lost / Not Interested when the opportunity is confirmed lost.
  • Record relevant details and the next follow-up action on the contact record.
  • Sales Status does not change email or SMS subscription preferences.

Follow-up expectations

Record relevant details and the next follow-up action on the contact record. For an interested buyer with a later timeline, use Long-Term Nurture and follow up based on their timing.

Frequently asked questions

Must every contact pass through all twelve statuses?
No. Contacts may skip stages or move back to an earlier stage. Choose the status that reflects their current position.
How do I distinguish later timing, silence, and a lost opportunity?
Use Long-Term Nurture when interest remains but timing is later; Unresponsive when current interest is unknown; Lost / Not Interested only when loss is confirmed or verified.
Is Sales Status the same as a Deal stage or HubSpot’s standard Lead Status?
No. This guide describes a Contact property named Sales Status. Deal stages track a separate Deal record, and HubSpot’s standard Lead Status is a different property. Do not assume changing one updates another.
Has this guide created or verified the HubSpot property?
No. This is training guidance and a property reference only. Ask your CRM administrator to confirm availability before using Sales Status in HubSpot.
